Havana, 1977

The work of Liudmila López explores the female identity using the concept of the shoe, with which she plays in such a way that she shapes new discourses that open a debate on gender roles. Roland Barthes from his semiotic studies pointed out how the use of a certain type of press defines a way of thinking, a degree of eroticism, a character, etc. The shoe symbol par excellence is a sign of feminine sensuality, comfort, etc. It is an essential article, appreciated by all, which contributes to the clothing and identity of an individual, giving him or her security and connecting him or her to the earth. One of the artist's inspirations was the children's game known in Cuba as cuquitas, which consists of cutting out and dressing small paper dolls. A game that conditions a feminine attitude towards a world of fantasy, the possibility of selection and manual action, which makes us dream of princesses as children. It also orients a vocation and underlines the transcendence that the extreme image has for humans.

Liudmila López, an artist of Cuban origin, began her artistic training in 1992 when she studied at the Escuela Vocacional de Artes Plásticas in Santiago de Cuba.
