MoCA Américas conducted a studio visit to Il Carico del Tratteggio, the graduation project of artist Monia Meluzzi at the University of Miami, as part of its ongoing engagement with practices emerging within South Florida’s academic environment. The visit offered a direct reading of the work at a critical stage of its exhibition development.
The project operates as an expanded system integrating drawing, ceramics, and installation-based structures, articulating a language centered on the mark as a generative unit. Through repetition, accumulation, and displacement, the “tratteggio” shifts from a graphic device into a structural principle that extends across both surface and space.
Spatial strategies for the presentation were addressed during the visit, with particular attention to the activation of the overhead plane. The suspension of elements from the ceiling—at varying heights and with rhythmic variation—was considered a means to intensify perceptual engagement and to introduce a dynamic logic within the installation.
Formally, the work suggests a sensibility that, without direct quotation, evokes certain Renaissance resonances in its treatment of line and surface. This latent reference intersects with a contemporary material approach, producing a productive tension between historical memory and experimentation.
This visit forms part of MoCA Américas’ broader initiative to engage with artists in formation at key institutions such as the University of Miami, reinforcing its commitment to identifying projects with strong conceptual grounding and potential curatorial trajectory.
