MoCAA Supports Arturo Montoto's Printmaking Production

By Rodriguez Collection Team

The Museum of Contemporary Art of the Americas (MoCAA) took advantage of the presence of Cuban artist and educator Arturo Montoto in Mérida, Yucatán, on the occasion of his attendance at the opening of the group exhibition "Colección MoCAA en Yucatán," in which he participates with a painting, to invite him to produce an edition of prints at the Praxis Havana Workshop, directed for several years by renowned Cuban printmaker Enrique Miralles (Tente).

The graphic work, made in black and white, revisits one of the recurring motifs in Montoto's production: the dialogue between nature and built space. With a remarkable capacity for synthesis and a meticulous handling of drawing, the print brings together the presence of an island fruit with what appears to be an architectural fragment of the city, establishing an allegorical relationship between both elements.

The edition was produced in the context of Montoto's stay in Mérida, a city the artist also visited as part of a series of activities linked to his recent production. For decades, his work has maintained a particular relationship with the universe of fruits, objects and everyday spaces, turned into vehicles for a visual reflection on nature, culture and identity.

Montoto also recently presented a group of paintings and drawings made in 2026 at the Arte1010 gallery in Mérida, as the result of an artist residency granted by the institution. The project, titled "Meridianas," was curated by Cuban specialist Sussette Martínez and drew a remarkable turnout, as well as wide coverage from the Yucatecan media.

The production of this new graphic edition coordinated by MoCAA thus adds another chapter to Arturo Montoto's presence in Yucatán and establishes a link between his recent pictorial research and the tradition of Cuban printmaking, represented in this case by the Praxis Havana Workshop and the experience of Enrique Miralles.
