MoCAA Visits Laura Capote's Exhibition in Mérida
By the Rodríguez Collection Team
"Expolios, habitar los límites. Cuba Yucatán" is the title of the exhibition being presented at the Mérida Visual Arts Center, produced by Cuban photographer Laura Capote, which Leonardo Rodríguez, founder and director of MoCAA, and Ivonne Ferrer, artist and deputy director of the institution, have just visited, accompanied by Cuban art critic David Mateo, curator of the exhibition.

Laura Capote, who recently joined, with one of her pieces, the inventory of artists with whom MoCAA works, offered Leonardo and Ivonne a guided tour of the exhibition and explained to them the technical and conceptual processes on which this project is based, one that is in a certain way autobiographical and that addresses the complex subject of emigration.

Laura Capote is a Cuban artist whose photographic practice explores the relationships between the body, landscape, identity and the migratory experience. Her work makes it possible to approach displacement not only as a geographic change, but also as a process of personal transformation and of rebuilding emotional ties with the territory. In her photographs, the Cuban landscape appears associated with belonging, uprooting and farewell, while her later stay in Mérida, Yucatán, opens new inquiries into rootedness, integration and the condition of being a foreigner. The nude body is a recurring element in this transition: first as an expression of identification with the environment of origin and, later, as a presence that persists and is redefined in the face of the new context.
