Taking advantage of their work visits to Mérida, Leonardo Rodríguez, founder of the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Americas (MoCAA), and Ivonne Ferrer, artist and director of said Florida institution, visited the creative studio of the young Cuban artist Ernesto García Sánchez in Mérida. There, his father, the Cuban master and painter Ernesto García Peña, is working for a season, immersed in the creation of a series of abstract works.

As a result of the pleasant and constructive meeting, a work from this singular series by Ernesto García Peña has become part of the Rodríguez Collection and, therefore, of the extensive holdings of MoCAA. García Peña, together with the printmaker Enrique Miralles (Tente) and the photographer Laura Capote, also based in Yucatán, is one of the Cuban artists who have recently joined the artistic inventory of MoCAA.
Ernesto García Peña (Matanzas, Cuba, 1949) is a distinguished Cuban painter, draftsman and printmaker, recognized for a body of work of marked lyricism, sensuality and chromatic richness. A graduate of the National School of Art in 1970 and of the Higher Institute of Art in 1987, he carried out extensive teaching work at the main art education institutions in Cuba. His visual language combines figuration with abstract elements, plant motifs, nudes and human figures, articulated through transparencies, delicate color gradations and dreamlike atmospheres that evoke the world of dreams, eroticism and imagination.
