There is an experience that unfolds daily in thousands of homes and rarely reaches the page — that of the person who cares for another. The Caregiver's Heart. Art as a Bridge, by Yamilet Uzcanga Trujillo, takes up precisely that territory, and does so from the inside. The Museum of Contemporary Art of the Americas hosts its presentation and signing on Saturday, August 22.
The book departs from a premise the author states without circling it. Caregiving is an act born of the soul. From there she opens a passage in which art works as shelter, as bridge, as company. Reflections, family voices and letters that beat with life compose a weave that reveals the invisible strength sustaining both the one who cares and the one who is cared for, a strength seldom named, since whoever exercises it is usually too busy exercising it.
What the book declines to do is the striking part. Its ambition is a meeting place, somewhere a reader can feel seen, understood, held. It offers an invitation to look at vulnerability with different eyes and to find the beauty that persists in the middle of uncertainty. That formal decision — leaving the burden unembellished and the endurance unheroic — carries the tone of the volume and explains its subtitle. Art as a bridge. As passage. As the thing that lets one cross toward another when words fall short.
The opening remarks will be delivered by Edith Monge Silva, director of Languages Foundation, which participates in this publishing project devoted to promoting bilingualism, preserving the Spanish language, and supporting works that strengthen Hispanic cultural heritage. The book carries the imprint of Editorial María T. and appears in Spanish as El corazón del cuidador. El arte como puente.
The launch happens in company. The museum's own invitation joins it to the opening of Eclectic, an exhibition by the Venezuelan painter Freddy Trujillo, and defines the day as an encounter between art, literature, caregiving and community. The programming is deliberate. In one room, canvases that have spent years asking how a bond is represented; in another, a book asking how one is sustained. Both arrive at the same answer from opposite directions, that creation is a way of accompanying, and a visitor who walks the full day will watch that conversation assemble itself.
