As part of the working trip undertaken by the leadership of the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Americas (MoCAA) to Mérida, Yucatán, Leonardo Rodríguez and Ivonne Ferrer visited Galería Secreta, where they were welcomed by its director, Mario Torre.
The visit offered an opportunity to engage directly with one of Mérida’s distinctive contemporary art spaces. Located in the city’s historic center, Galería Secreta has developed a profile defined by its discreet character, its guided visits, and its use of an industrial space transformed into a venue for contemporary art.
During the meeting, Torre held an extensive and cordial conversation with Rodríguez and Ferrer and guided them through the two exhibition projects currently open to the public. The encounter allowed MoCAA’s representatives to become better acquainted with the gallery’s exhibition program and with the role it occupies within Mérida’s current cultural landscape.
Cuban artist James Bonachea also participated in the visit. Bonachea, whose studio is located within Galería Secreta and whose work is already part of MoCAA’s collection, presented several pieces from his recent curatorial project Colección de asombros, still installed in the exhibition space. The artist is also preparing a new work that will be included in the collective exhibition MoCAA will inaugurate at the Museum of the City of Mérida in September 2026.
Art critic and Artcrónica director David Mateo was also present during the professional meeting, which formed part of MoCAA’s broader agenda in Mérida and its ongoing approach to the artistic and cultural scene of Yucatán.
