MoCAA Establishes a Cooperation and Exchange Agreement with Instituto Cultural Urukum

By Rodriguez Collection Team

The Museum of Contemporary Art of the Americas (MoCAA) is establishing a formal relationship of cooperation and exchange with the Instituto Cultural Urukum, a cultural initiative based in Britânia, in the state of Goiás, in central Brazil. This alliance responds to a shared vision: to expand the circulation of contemporary art, strengthen artistic education and research, and build institutional bridges capable of connecting territories, communities, and creative scenes beyond traditional centers.

MoCAA’s leadership recently visited Urukum’s developing sites and facilities in Britânia, gaining first-hand insight into the scale of the project and its singular territorial context: a city of just over 5,000 inhabitants, located on the shores of Lago dos Tigres, recognized as the largest natural lake in South America. From this landscape and human scale, Urukum proposes a model of action that connects environment, community, and contemporaneity, expanding cultural presence in regions that have historically received less infrastructure and visibility.

The Instituto Cultural Urukum, a privately funded initiative scheduled to open in 2026, will develop its projects through partnerships and sponsorships—including, where appropriate, public cultural funding mechanisms—according to the specific needs of each program. Conceived as a broad, multidisciplinary center, Urukum maintains a strong commitment to the visual arts while also aspiring to host other forms of expression through public programming, educational initiatives, workshops, and professional training processes, as well as exchanges and research- and creation-oriented residencies, with a sustained emphasis on inclusion and the cultural development of the territory.

As part of this agreement, MoCAA will provide guidance in the creation of scholarship and artist residency programs led by Urukum, contributing its experience in call design, selection criteria, curatorial mentoring, and public outreach strategies. In addition, MoCAA will offer specialized advisory support, providing conceptual and curatorial guidance to the Institute in defined areas of its institutional development.

Reciprocally, this collaboration will enable artists affiliated with MoCAA—including creators represented in our collection and artists active within Miami’s local community—to present their work in Brazil through the Institute’s programs. This international mobility expands the visibility of artistic production from South Florida, strengthens cultural exchange between regions, and creates new professional opportunities for artists based in our area.

Through this alliance, MoCAA contributes to projecting Miami’s cultural diversity outward, while simultaneously incorporating experiences, knowledge, and dialogues that enrich our local artistic community and connect it to broader international networks.
